Check Engine Light

Today’s automobiles are equipped with an OBD (onboard diagnostics) computer that monitors the performance of various vehicle systems in real-time. If a problem occurs, the computer records an error code and an amber light on the instrument panel illuminates, warning the operator of the problem. This light may say “check engine”, or may have a symbol of an engine. Technically, it is known as an MIL (malfunction indicator lamp).
